Patrick MacDonald: Principal Investigator (Pubmed)- office (780)492-8063 Patrick obtained his PhD in 2003 working with Dr. Mike Wheeler in Physiology at the University of Toronto. Following this was a two year, CIHR funded, post-doc at Lund University in Sweden in the group of Dr. Patrik Rorsman. In 2005 the group moved to Oxford University where Patrick continued to work until June 2006 when he was recruited to the Dept. of Pharmacology and the ADI at the University of Alberta. Patrick and his wife Rhonda have two kids (Mae and Jack) and a dog (Molly). |

Dr. Jocelyn Manning-Fox: Research Associate (Pubmed)- lab (780)492-9475; office (780)248-1277 Joss obtained her PhD in 2000 from the University of Bristol, UK. She then came to Canada to undertake an AHFMR Fellowship in the lab of Dr. Peter Light at the University of Alberta, studying ATP-sensitive potassium channels. Her interest in ion channels and beta-cell physiology continued with a CIHR and Faculty of Medicine funded post-doc at the University of Toronto under the guidance of Dr Michael Wheeler. Joss joined the MacDonald lab in 2006 is happy to be back in Edmonton! |

Dr. Xiao-Qing Dai: Postdoctoral Fellow– lab (780)492-9475 Xiao-Qing joins us from her recent PhD in the Department of Physiology here at the University of Alberta. During her PhD, she studied the regulation of polycystin-L channels in the Chen lab. Xiao-Qing is the recipient of an AHFMR Fellowship to study the regulation of voltage-dependent K+ channels in insulin secreting cells. |
Nancy Smith: Laboratory Assistant– lab (780)492-9475 Nancy joined the lab in January 2007 as a Laboratory Assistant. She obtained her diploma in Biological Sciences-Lab and Research from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. She is a born and raised Edmontonian! |
Jelena Kolic: Graduate Student– lab (780)492-9475 Jelena recently completed a 4th year Honours Pharmacology project with us and subsequently worked with in the lab as an AHFMR-funded summer student. As of September 2008, Jelena starts her graduate studies with us, working on PI3 kinase and insulin secretion. |
Aliya Spigelman: Graduate Student– lab (780)492-9475 Aliya recently completed an internship with Bristol-Myers Squibb through the Department of Pharmacology, and worked with us this past summer as a Summer Student. As of September 2008, Aliya is now pursuing her graduate studies in the lab. |
Dr. Gary Pigeau: Postdoctoral Fellow Gary obtained his PhD in Biotechnology in 2007 from Brock University working with Dr. D. Inglis examining the effect of osmotic stress on gene expression profiles and metabolite production in Saccaromyces cerevisiae. Gary joined our lab in early 2007 to study PI3 kinase in insulin secretion and became our King of the TIRF. As of July 2008, Gary has taken a Staff Scientist position in the biotech industry with Iogen Corporation in Ottawa. |
Dr. Salma Hanna: Postdoctoral Fellow Salma joined the lab from the University of Saskatchewan where she earned her PhD in 2004 under the guidance of Prof. R. Wang, examining the regulation of ion channels in vascular smooth muscle cells. Following her PhD, Salma worked in the lab of Prof. R. Pierson where her research on emergency contraceptives and the cardiovascular system received the Top Research Award from the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF). Salma started her new position at Capital Health on December 1, 2007. |
